The EnviroTas system has been the benchmark in reliable wastewater treatment.

It is an onsite wastewater management system designed and built in Tasmania to handle local conditions and provide safe, sustainable water recycling for homes and businesses.

An onsite wastewater management system (OWMS) is also known as an aerated wastewater treatment system (AWTS) or a secondary treatment system (STS). The EnviroTas-AS is an advanced secondary AWTS which is the most advanced form of these systems.

This AWTS takes all household wastewater and recycles it into clean, odourless water suitable for sub-surface irrigation under lawns and gardens. With its robust design, proven reliability, and straightforward servicing schedule, the EnviroTas-AS is a practical choice for families and businesses needing dependable wastewater treatment in Tasmania.

Most importantly, the EnviroTas-AS is accredited for six-monthly servicing where irrigation disposal is below ground. This means ongoing servicing costs are some of the lowest on the market. By comparison, most other systems require quarterly servicing, which quickly adds up.

In Tasmania, if your property is not connected to the sewer, having a fully accredited wastewater treatment system is not optional and is required by law and backed by council regulations. These systems protect waterways, the environment, and public health, ensuring that wastewater is treated safely before it is dispersed back into the environment.

Older septic tanks were once common, but they only offered basic storage and digestion. They do not provide the same level of treatment or environmental protection as a modern, advanced secondary wastewater treatment system. By contrast, the EnviroTas-AS uses a proven five-stage natural treatment process that significantly reduces solids, odours, and nutrients, producing an effluent that is safe for re-use on gardens and lawns.

For families, this means a residential wastewater treatment system that is safe, sustainable, and fully compliant with local requirements. For commercial purposes, including councils and businesses, it means a system that can be trusted to perform consistently while meeting all environmental obligations.

Five Stage Natural Treatment Process

At the core of the EnviroTas-AS is a five stage natural treatment process. This process uses a combination of anaerobic and aerobic bacteria to digest waste, followed by clarification and nutrient reduction. The result is a class-leading treated effluent quality without the need for heavy chemical dosing. By duplicating the way nature works, this system avoids harsh chemicals while producing safe, clean water that can be reused on site.

The stages include:

  • 2 separate stages of primary treatment where solids are separated and broken down by anaerobic bacteria.
  • Secondary treatment, in which aeration introduces oxygen and aerobic bacteria to further reduce organic matter.
  • Sedimentation to settle any remaining particles, which will be returned to the first chamber.
  • Tertiary treatment to polish the water, with optional chlorination for above-ground dispersal.

The resulting treated effluent meets specific nutrient-reduction standards, lowering nitrogen and phosphorus to safeguard soils and waterways. Ultimately, the process produces clean, clarified, and disinfected water that maintains a safe concentration of natural, environmentally beneficial nutrients.
